HeadBlade and HeadSlick Review

Around 5 months ago I began the process of shaving my head. This was a drastic change from my previous hairstyle which came down to the middle of my back. I knew nothing about shaving my head, I'd had long hair for something close to 8 or 9 years and had barely even had a haircut in that time, so I enlisted the help of a couple of female friends who happily (perhaps overly so) began the process of buzzing down and shaving my dome.

When I started shaving and maintaining it myself I just used a standard Gillette Mach3 and Edge shaving gel. This provided the results I was looking for after I got over the initial learning curve where I bled at least once every shave. This regimen has been fine but it takes longer than I would like and can be awkward in a couple of places (most notably behind the ears), so naturally I Googled for head shaving tips as undoubtedly many new head shavers will and found a huge collection of information. I dug through the pile and one day stumbled across something called the HeadBlade and was immediately intrigued.

The HeadBlade is a novel approach to head shaving which lends itself to the natural way in which people run their hands over their head instead of the sometimes awkward use of long-handled safety razors. I saw a couple videos of people using it (rather quickly might I add) and I decided to give it a try along with its companion product – HeadSlick. The handle of the razor is rounded to fit the contours of the head. At the front is of course the blade, and at the back is a small pad which is supposed to remain in contact with your scalp (on other models there is a wheel rather than a pad) to allow for a smooth pushing motion.

When the package arrived I was a bit excited and since I needed a shave anyway, I decided to immediately give it a go. I lathered up as normal and tried it out. The first use wasn't exactly as I'd imagined, but it was definitely an improvement over the Mach3. I could definitely tell that I was able to shave my head quicker this time around and that's one of the things I was after so kudos to the product for living up to its expectation. Shaving with the HeadBlade is a completely different feeling than using a regular razor. Instead of gripping the razor with a couple of fingers, you involve your entire hand in a natural movement from front to back.

One note is that there is a definite learning curve to overcome when you start using this, I cut myself several times, but I hope it will work itself out within a week of use. Though the movement is natural and intuitive the fact that it says to not put ANY pressure on the blade when shaving is not and takes some getting used to. After a bit of practice I fully expect this will result in a great improvement in my head shaving routine.

The HeadSlick shaving cream isn't a huge help over the Edge shaving gel I was using previously from what I can see thus far. The cream comes in an 8 oz. bottle and is mentholated, so it has a slight cooling effect which is nice. It claims to be specially formulated to give the smoothest shave possible, but I haven't noticed a huge difference yet, perhaps when I've mastered the HeadBlade the benefits of the HeadSlick will become more evident, it's hard to notice how smooth the shave is when you've just put a slice in your melon after all.

All in all I'd recommend both products, once you get past the initial learning curve of the HeadBlade I think it'll be a worthwhile investment towards a nice quick and close shave.
